Celebrating International Day for Girls
Friday 10th October 2014
Empowering Women - Empowering Humanity
On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. For its second observance, this year the Day’s focus is “Innovating for Girls’ Education”.
The day was celebrated with interest and zeal at North Nazimabad Primary Branch II. Discussions were held a day prior regarding the rights of girls across the world. It was heartening to see that not only girls but boys too shared the belief that girls can do anything that boys can do - running a company to leading a country, flying an aeroplane to doing stunts in films.
Girls also appreciated the fact that they encountered no discrimination at home or at school. Their parents, teachers and fellow students treated them with respect and fairness. They did realize that in certain societies girls were not treated fairly and were not given access to education and boys were preferred over them.
A special assembly was conducted. Students presented their views, some shared poems. All the girl students and staff members wore pink ribbons. Teachers also showed their solidarity by wearing pink.
Celebrating this day created an awareness among students that the fulfillment of girls’ right to education is first and foremost an obligation and moral imperative which not only changes the fate of girls themselves but also transforms societies and in turn nations.
The assembly concluded with resounding cheers for Girls.
